Heat transfer has more to do with frame size, mass, and design; ribbed or smooth frames, open or enclosed frames vary greatly from one motor design to another. The frame surface of any motor is made up of hot spots and hot spots that are usually directly related to the internal and external air circulation patterns, and the external temperature of the motor has little to do with the thermal problems that may exist inside the motor.

Motor Windings

The specified operating temperature of a motor is related to the temperature of the windings, insulation is used to separate electrical components and prevent short circuit anomalies that can lead to winding burnout and motor failure. Motor insulation consists of magnet wire coatings used to insulate the coil wires from each other. Slot unit and phase insulation, usually made of high-strength polyester sheet to provide protection to ground and insulating varnish with moisture resistance, are all necessary. However, it does not protect the motor from other factors such as vibration, chemical contamination and abrasive generation that may be present in the environment in which the motor operates. Motor windings are designed to operate at specific temperatures to ensure an average service life of 20,000 hours, based on the set temperature criteria for motors in various enclosures of the insulation class.

Environmental Considerations

Understanding the location, mounting and operating conditions, motors need to be mounted using a sturdy base to minimize the possibility of misalignment and the increase in friction and vibration that can occur. These factors can cause the motor to strain and therefore may lead to overheating. Ensure that there is adequate airflow around the motor and that there are no particles in the air if the motor is not sealed. Keep the motor away from direct airflow from heaters or air conditioners, and from open windows where humidity or precipitation can easily enter the area.

Use the proper enclosure for the motor’s operating environment; for example, if your environment is full of dust and debris that can easily get inside the motor and clog the works, a vented enclosure for airflow cooling may be the wrong way to go. If the motor is in direct sunlight most of the day, a sealed enclosure may be the wrong choice. High altitude can also affect motors, as thin air provides less cooling capacity.

Clean energy is as important as the other factors mentioned here, and many electronic drives focus on reducing harmonics and providing good power quality. However, if the voltage imbalance between phases exceeds 2%, the windings may be damaged. Consider also running the motor at about 80% of the recommended load so that changes that occur over time can be compensated for. Another problem is low voltage, which can cause the motor to draw more current. Likewise, running the motor at high voltages for extended periods of time may saturate the motor’s iron core, leading to overheating.

Safety Features

Properly sized, installed and applied motors operating under standard conditions have little cause for concern when overheating occurs. This does not mean that unexpected environmental changes cannot occur. After all, equipment ages, is misused, and can be subjected to unusual shocks or vibrations from other areas of the system. That’s why application engineers often install overload protectors, such as resistance temperature devices or thermocouples, into motion system designs. This approach ensures that the motor goes offline before catastrophic failure occurs.

If your safety equipment consistently shuts down the motor, it may be improperly sized and overheating, and a quick check of the current draw on the motor will tell if the motor is working properly. Check the current reading against the specifications listed on the motor’s nameplate rating to make sure it is operating within range.

With regard to heat inside the motor, you cannot measure it by the external temperature of the motor;
