International Institute of Electrical Engineers

The International Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers or IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) is an international association of engineers in electronics and information science, and is one of the largest professional and technical organizations in the world (in terms of membership) with 360,000 members from 175 countries (by 2005 (2005). It was founded on January 1, 1963. Its headquarters are in New York City, USA. IEEE has more than 300 local chapters in over 150 countries. Current membership is 360,000. IEEE publishes a variety of journals, journals, books and organizes more than 300 professional conferences each year.

Overview

IEEE is positioned as a “scientific and educational organization directly oriented toward the study of electrical and electronic engineering communications, computer engineering, computer science theory and principles, and related engineering branches of art and science. To achieve this goal, IEEE assumes the role of organizer of several scientific journals and conferences. It is also a broad developer of industry standards in the areas of electrical energy, energy, biotechnology and health care, information technology, information security, communications, consumer electronics, transportation, aerospace technology, and nanotechnology. IEEE is actively developing and participating in the educational field, for example by introducing a school licensing system for electrical engineering courses in higher education institutions.

IEEE produces 30% of the world’s literature in the fields of electronics and electrical and computer science, and it also produces more than 900 current industry standards. It also sponsors or co-sponsors more than 300 international technical conferences each year, and the IEEE is composed of 37 societies that organize related specialized technical areas, with more than 300 conferences regularly held by local organizations each year. The IEEE publishes a wide range of peer-reviewed journals and is the leading international standards body (900 current standards, 700 standards under development).

The majority of IEEE members are electrical engineers, computer engineers, and computer scientists, although the organization’s broad interests also attract engineers from other disciplines (e.g., mechanical engineering, civil engineering, [biology]], physics, and mathematics).

Located in New York State, USA, IEEE was formed in 1963 by the merger of the Institute of Radio Engineers (IRE, founded in 1912) and the American Institute of Electrical Engineers (AIEE, founded in 1884), and has a regional and technically complementary organizational structure, with geographic locations or technical centers as organizational units (e.g., IEEE Philadelphia Section and IEEE Computer Society]]. ). It manages decentralized organizations that recommend rules and implement programs (e.g., IEEE-USA explicitly serves members, professionals, and the public in the United States).
